Wartsila Designing Fuel-Saving Ships for China

Wartsila Corporation (Wartsila) says it will design six new fuel-efficient ships that will support oilfield operations in the South China Sea and Bohai Bay under a contract with China Oilfield Services Ltd. (COSL), a subsidiary of the state-owned China National Offshore Oil Corp. (CNOOC).

The ships, two platform supply vessels (PSVs) and four anchor-handling tug supply vessels, will be based on a Wartsila Ship Design model that includes an optimised hull design for greater fuel efficiency and lower emissions than standard designs.

The ships will work in challenging weather conditions, and the designs will focus on reliability and high efficiency and performance.

"Our values are also very much aligned", Riku-Pekka H?gg, Vice President, Wartsila Ship Design.

"We have enjoyed many years of close co-operation with both COSL and its parent company, China National Offshore Oil Corporation, and they are very familiar with Wartsila's broad range of solutions, including our ship designs, propulsion machinery, automation and control systems, and our environmental compliance solutions," said Riku-Pekka H?gg, vice president of Wartsila Ship Design.

"Our values are also very much aligned, with both companies emphasising total lifecycle costs, energy efficiency, and environmental sustainability."

In July, Wartsila announced it would supply liquefied natural gas (LNG) capable main engines for two Chinese tugs being built for another CNOOC subsidiary, CNOOC Energy Technology & Services Ltd. (CETS).
