Analysts expect 1.5 natural gas vehicles on China's roads by 2015, making the country the world's largest market for this type of cars.

Brenda Smith, a council member of the Asia Pacific Natural Gas Vehicles Association, said that markets all over the world are ready for an era of natural gas vehicles, and China is the one leading the way. Currently the country has 1 million natural gas vehicles on its roads, and 100,000 more are added to the total number annually.

"Natural gas automobiles are developing fast due to easy access to natural gas, which is cheap, safe and easy to transport," said Smith.

Long Zezhi, a senior engineer in the petroleum and natural gas field, said that in the following years natural gas vehicles will see a boost in China thanks to the country's environmental and economic advantages of natural gas. China has been focusing mainly on hybrid and electric vehicles, but the lack of a natural gas filling station network is a big obstacle in increasing the number of natural gas automobiles.

"China has already formed a complete industrial chain. It includes natural gas compression and liquefaction as well as its storage and transportation, and the manufacturing of natural gas cars and their parts and accessories," said Yao Mingde, honorary director of the China Road Transport Association.
